Wrinkles and fine lines are generally described as skin creases, folds or surface lines on the skin. Most people start to notice fine lines appearing around their eyes, frown and forehead in their late 20’s or early 30’s. As we continue to age wrinkles that were once mild or superficial in nature begin to deepen. We also begin to notice signs of ageing under our eyes, in our temples, through our mid and lower face and eventually in our neck and décolletage.

What causes wrinkles and fine lines?
Wrinkles are caused by a number of internal and external factors over the course of our lifetime. It is well recognized that natural ageing and sun damage are the biggest contributors to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.
The dermis layer, or middle layer of the skin, contains elastin, collagen and other fibrous tissues that continuously collaborate to support the structure, shape and fullness of the skin. As we age the production of collagen decreases, and skin cells loose the ability to retain texture, firmness, moisture and tone.
Other culprits responsible for the development of wrinkles include smoking, which accelerates the skin’s normal ageing process, and repeated facial expressions–squinting, smiling or frowning–that eventually form permanent marks and lines on the face.

How will I recognize if my skin is showing the signs of aging?
One of the first signs of prematurely aging skin is the noticeable loss of a glowing complexion, paired with dark under eye circles, fine lines or dry, less elastic skin.

Where do wrinkles and fine lines form?
Wrinkles and fine lines can appear anywhere on the face, some wrinkles can be classified as mild and superficial, while other wrinkles form deep furrows or overlaps, particularly around the mouth, cheeks and lips. These lines or furrows are typically classified as either dynamic or static.
Dynamic wrinkles appear during facial expressions but are not visible at rest whilst static lines remain present in the skin after facial expression is over and in some areas can give the appearance of worry or anger.
Upper face
Constant muscle contraction during facial expression is the main reason fine lines and wrinkles appear on the skin in the upper third of the face. Though, like all areas of the face, gravity, volume loss and environmental damage (eg. smoking and sun damage) play a significant role.
Midface
Dark eye circles and hollowing under the eyes can be genetic and are also considered a normal sign of aging. As the muscle and skin loose elasticity, fat pads sitting under the muscle of the lower eye can protrude. When coupled with the volume (fat) depletion in the mid face and increased laxity the skin, the midface can also begin to appear flat or furrowed adding to the hollowing of the eye. Pressure from these structures can add to the appearance of Naso-labial folds, another common sign of the ageing process
Lower face
Lip wrinkles (or smokers lines) and the presence of a mental crease (horizontal line above the chin) are the result of strong muscle contraction coupled with thinning skin. Deep lines around the mouth and lower face are the result of the combined effects of volume loss, gravity and skin laxity. As with the upper face, environmental damage also plays a significant role in aging through this area.
